What is AI readiness?

AI readiness is how well AI assistants can read and quote your website. Here is what it covers and how to know where you stand.

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants answer from what they can read on your site, so a page that ranks well in search can still be hard for AI to use.
  • Six signals decide readability: crawler access, structure, metadata, content, performance and FAQ content.
  • Readable is not the same as recommended, but unreadable sites rarely get named.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity about your business, the answer draws on what those systems could read about you online. AI readiness is how well your website serves those readers.

Why it matters now

People increasingly ask an AI assistant a direct question and trust the answer, instead of clicking through a list of search results. If your business is hard for those systems to read, you are less likely to appear in the answer, however good your traditional SEO is.

Search engines index pages and rank them. AI assistants read, summarize and answer. A page can rank well on Google and still be hard for an assistant to use if its key facts are buried in images or scripts, or if crawlers are blocked.

How AI systems read your site

  1. Crawl. AI crawlers fetch your pages, if your site lets them in.
  2. Parse. The system extracts headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and structured data. Clean, semantic HTML parses well. Text inside images doesn't parse at all.
  3. Cite. When answering, the model favors sources it can quote accurately. Clear, factual pages are more likely to be used than vague marketing copy.

The six signals

SignalWhat it means
Crawler accessYour robots.txt and server must let AI crawlers in. Many sites block them by accident.
Page structureOne clear main headline, descriptive subheadings and real paragraphs.
Metadata and structured dataPage titles, meta descriptions and schema.org markup say exactly what a page is about.
Content clarityState facts plainly: what you do, where, for whom and at what price.
FAQ contentQuestions and answers mirror how people prompt AI assistants.
PerformanceSlow or error-prone pages may be crawled less thoroughly.

Six dimensions decide whether AI can read your site: crawler access, structure, metadata, content, FAQ signals, and performance. Every CrawlReady scan checks all six.

A CrawlReady report scores all six, each out of 100, and combines them into one overall AI readiness score — the same six categories you see on the report are the ones that decide it.

What "not ready" looks like

Ask an assistant about your business. If it hedges, gets your services wrong, names a competitor, or says it can't find information, that's a symptom. Answers vary from one run and one assistant to the next, so ask a few times before drawing conclusions. The cause is often one of the six signals above, and many of the fixes take an afternoon.

What to do about it

  1. Run a scan to see your score on all six signals.
  2. Start with the highest-impact fixes: crawler access first, then FAQ content, titles and descriptions.
  3. Re-scan after you make changes to confirm they worked.
